Introduction: If there is a mythical car above all others, it is the AC Cobra. The brainchild of Carroll Shelby, who married a British roadster with robust American engineering. The brand of replicas LOS ANGELES EXOTICS (L. A. E) originates from California, as the name suggests. Historically, however, L. A. E traces its roots to a chassis welding and Cobra kit workshop in Oklahoma. After a few COBRA KITS sold by this artisanal workshop, lacking a real commercial brand, two of the protagonists (the Anderson brothers) decided to create a Californian national-scale brand: Los Angeles Exotics. Best known for its replicas of Carroll Shelby’s legendary Cobra, L. A. Exotics also ventured into Ford 34 and Ford GT40… but with much less success. In conceiving their Cobra replica, L. A. Exotics wiped the slate clean. Chronologically, with the LA Exotics brand, we are at the very end of the 1980s… L. A. Exotics did not want to force an old chassis (single-round tube frame) and a cramped cabin, as on the original Cobras. This commercial and technical choice gave birth to a robust chassis made up of chunky rectangular beams 4" x 2" with an X reinforcement, eliminating diagonal torsion. This more modern architecture was cleverly complemented by welded metallic floor pans (3/ 16" thick = 4. 7mm) and lowered by 10 cm. These not only further stiffen the chassis by limiting torsion, but also increase legroom for tall occupants. Passive safety was not sacrificed in the name of performance and weight saving, as the doors were fitted with metal anti-crash bars. Very pragmatic, the Anderson brothers used only “Made in USA” components for their Cobras, exclusively on Ford mainstream sub-assemblies (Mustang front/ rear suspension, Ford solid axles). For various reasons, L. A Exotics disappeared in the 1990s due to family reasons, even as commercial success was evident. Mechanical: Mileage recorded at 3816 miles (6105 km). The whole system operates correctly, without jolts or anomalies. The engine’s sound is very balanced and steady. Ignition, carburetion, oil pressure: correct. No sealing defects observed. Condition of the engine bay and subframes: very good. Good condition and normal operation of electrical systems and harness. The engine shows no instability. No interruptions in the accelerator response observed. No leaks at the head gasket observed. Mechanical: Vehicle equipped with a longitudinally mounted Ford 427 CI big-block V8. Complete mechanical rebuild. Pistons, crankshaft, connecting rods, and tappets are new. Presence of an oil cooler. Under-engine protective plate present. High-capacity Moroso competition oil pan. New high-flow oil pump. Aluminum intake manifold, dual-plane Performer 390 model by Edelbrock. Aluminum medium riser heads, Performer RPM by Edelbrock.
