The Austin Healey 100/ 4 was the marque’s first sports car, created through a collaboration between Austin and the Donald Healey Motor Company. The collaboration began in 1952 and in 1953, sales of the 100/ 4 began. The 100/ 4 is a quintessential British sports roadster of its era, and also represents the luxury of British roadsters.
Donald Healey contacted Leonard Lord, the managing director at Austin, to enquire about the design of the 100/ 4 which would be produced by budding designer Gerry Coker. He advised basing the design on the Austin A90 Atlantic, which they did. In 1952, a sporty prototype of the powerful and luxurious roadster was shown. Everyone was enthralled, including Leonard Lord, and he decided to back the Austin Healey idea. Yet customers in the United States seemed ready for this British roadster.
The ‘Hundred’ (Cent in English) is fitted with a 2. 6-litre inline-four engine fed by two SU carburettors and produces 90 bhp. There is a three-speed manual gearbox to control the car precisely. The rear wheels are driven by the engine, as was normal at the time, and the car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/ h in just ten seconds. As the name suggests, the mission of this car was to design a vehicle that reaches a maximum speed of 100 mph or more (160 km/ h). It is said the top speed is 185 km/ h, mission accomplished.
Austin Healey 100/ 4 BN1
The 100/ 4 BN1 is the very first Austin Healey, so it had to be a success, and it was. Especially in the United States, this British car enjoyed huge success. For only two years this roadster was produced and around 5, 000 cars were sold. At first glance that may not seem a large figure, but in the context of the era and the niche, the BN1 was indeed a success. The BN1 was also a pioneer in the decades that followed for the design of widely acclaimed British roadsters.
The distinctive design and its trailblazing role for British roadsters make the BN1, and the 100/ 4 in general, highly sought-after collectibles whose value will rise substantially.
