Description
Presented at the Geneva Motor Show 1998, the Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph marks a key milestone in the brand's history, then undergoing a full industrial and financial transition. It replaces the aging SZ series (Silver Spirit, Mulsanne), obsolete after more than twenty years in service. Unable to develop a new model alone, Rolls-Royce entered into a technical partnership with BMW, which supplies, in particular, the engine and several mechanical components.
The Silver Seraph is thus equipped with a 5. 4-litre BMW M73 V12 developing 326 bhp, already known from the BMW 750i/ iL, making it the first Rolls-Royce V12 since the Phantom III. Paired with a ZF automatic gearbox, this engine favours quietness and smoothness over sportiness. The very comfortable suspension confirms its positioning as a luxury limousine, oriented towards passenger well-being.
The interior continues Rolls-Royce tradition with burr walnut veneer, Connolly leather, thick carpets and exceptional insulation, despite some BMW-origin control elements deemed less elegant. The on-board experience remains unique, dominated by calm, refinement and an incomparable hushed atmosphere.
Exterior design, signed Steve Harper, adopts an elegant and discreet retro-design, paying homage to the marque's historic models (Shadow, Cloud). With its imposing dimensions, the Seraph casts a majestic presence.
Victim of the split between Volkswagen (Bentley, Crewe factory) and BMW (Rolls-Royce name), the Silver Seraph saw its career abruptly cut short. Built until 2002, it was assembled in only 1, 570 units, including 127 long-wheelbase Park Ward versions.
Rare and often overlooked, it remains today a unique testament to Rolls-Royce.
