1965 Ford Falcon – Classified of the Week

America, if you have never been, has a lot of space. Like, a lot. This is why their cars, from a time when America made its own cars, were generally huge. All you need to do is watch any ’70s or ’80s American cop drama to see evidence of this. Huge land yachts howling around corners, tyres smoking. Massive beasts that look at home on the streets of L.A, but less so on the streets of Loughborough. They’re cool, and we love them, but they don’t ‘work’ in the UK. Well, not all of them. America did build smaller ‘personal’ cars, as they called them. And they do work here in the UK. Take this utterly gorgeous 1965 Ford Falcon for example. All of that U.S flair, but in a far more usable package.

The Ford Falcon was a car built in response to America’s need for frugality. Plus, European brands were infiltrating the land of the free, and people loved them. America had to adapt. The Ford Falcon was smaller, lighter and altogether more practical than the cars before it. Don’t get us wrong, Ford was still making rolling monsters in the form of the Galaxie and the LTD and so on, but if you wanted something more manageable, the Ford Falcon was just the ticket. And because it was, by comparison to the rest of its Ford contemporaries, it had some blinding performance potential.

The car you’re looking at here, a 1965 Ford Falcon, is a second-generation version, with a more squared-off design. It also shared a lot of parts with the Mustang, and as we all know, the Mustang was synonymous with speed. With a unified frame design, it was also taut and tight, giving it impressive handling for the time. Then, when Ford dropped a 289 V8 into it, it became a bona fide hot rod. Though sadly, it just couldn’t keep up with the huge sales figures of the Mustang. A shame, because the Flacon was and still is a great machine. And today, it’s arguably more of a head-turner than a Mustang, given the Falcon is so much rarer. Especially in this condition.

This 1965 model has wanted for nothing, it seems. The paint is fresh, the car has never been welded, the engine is on song, the chrome shines like new, the interior wouldn’t look out of place in a 1965 showroom and the whole thing comes together to create what has to be one of the best-looking American cars for sale on Car & Classic right now. Furthermore, this 1965 Ford Falcon has only covered a verified 57,000 miles. Remarkable.

There are a lot of reasons to love this car, but for us, the main one is the usability. This Ford Flacon is roughly the same size as a current Skoda Octavia, so it’s going to be no more difficult to live with than any other car here in the UK. It will fit in your garage without needing to have builders widen it, it won’t take up four lanes, and you won’t feel like the captain of a cruise liner every time you take it out for a drive. It’s all the American flair you could want, but without having to worry about ‘will it fit down that road’ etc.
