1967 Ford Mustang – Auction Car of the Week

The Ford Mustang was, and continues to be a huge global success. Ford thought, in 1964, that it might sell a few thousand. Before it knew it though, it was selling millions. And that never really stopped. The Mustang was a compact (in American terms) sports car for the people. It could be whatever the buyer wanted it to be. A humble, but handsome straight-six, a rip-snorting V8, a coupe, a notchback, a convertible. Whatever the buyer wanted, within the parameters of being sporty, Ford would gladly oblige. But with a production run spanning nearly sixty years, it must be impossible to say which year gave us the best Mustang, right? Well, no, actually. It was the 1967 Ford Mustang fastback that was the best. And that’s what we have here, somewhat handily.

Okay, we know saying the 1967 Ford Mustang fastback is the best one is something of a contentious statement. Cars are subjective, after all. You might like the purity of the ’64, you might prefer the idea of the 215 version with the steering wheel on the right side. Or of course, you might be one of those strange people who actually like the Mustang II. However, the reality is that for many, the ’67 fastback is the king ding-a-ling, and we can see why. This one, which has made it to the giddy age of 55, is even more special though. It’s only covered a mere 6,903 miles from new. No, really. If you want a Mustang that is pure, that is as close to original as possible and that simply be beaten in Top Trumps if you play the mileage, this is it.

The fastback was a masterstroke in terms of design. It was nothing more than a bit of extra lead up top, but it change the Mustang. It became a longer, lower, sleeker machine despite nothing actually changing other than the roof. It made the car look not just better, but pretty much perfect. Back up the looks with a suitable V8, and you had the kind of muscle cars on your hands, and driveway. And it was cheap for what it was. It gave American buyers a taste of the dream, an ability to grab at the open road, a taste of freedom with a V8 soundtrack. And as we all know, it also came laden with ‘cool’. Even more so after the world of cinema fell in love with it. The Mustang has more screen credits to its name than any other car.

Back to this particular 1967 Ford Mustang, it was bought new by a gentleman in California who drove it – sparingly – until 1973 when his licence was revoked. Obviously still very much in love with the big old ‘stang, he didn’t sell and instead it sat on his driveway for an incredible 36 years until he sadly passed away. After this, a Brit working in L.A bought it with just 6,282 miles on the clock. It was recommissioned and repainted (the paint hadd taken a beating from the California sun) and he used it daily for short time before once again putting the car in storage. Eventually, it was brought back to the UK and in 2020 was given a significant mechanical overhaul. new bearings, uprated oil pump, forged rods and pistons, ported heads, Offenhauser intake and Holley carb along with a whole host of other bits. It’s been tweaked, too. Nothing to the car’s detriment, and for the most part nothing that can’s be reversed. There’s a Ford Performance differential, chrome strut brace, new Torque Thrust wheels, Level 2 Drag Racing suspension kit, HSLA steel K-members, twin-tube pro-coilovers and a shaker hood air intake. It’s a subtle street rod, and it all… works. Mustangs should be a bit rowdy and a bit brash, especially in 1967 flavour.

And now, this 1967 Ford Mustang could be yours. It’s an investment with such low mileage, that’s for sure. But it’s also never been seen on the UK show circuit, so if you want to win some trophies, this is your chance. This is a car that will excite, captivate and charm everyone who comes across it. There simply isn’t another one out there like this. Imagine it, you’re sitting there on that incredibly original black vinyl trim, one hand on the Hurst shifter, feathering the throttle and hearing (and feeling) that V8 respond to your touch. This is the muscle car dream. And if you bid, it could be your muscle car reality.
