Muc-Off All-Weather Chain Lube – Product Review

We’ve been spending a lot of our time with motorbikes recently. It’s understandable, given the weather, and we’ll be the first to admit that riding in anything other than warm, sunny conditions is not something that we choose to entertain. We have our classic cars for that. We get the appeal of the epic, all weather motorcycle trip, don’t get us wrong, but to us there’s not a lot better than blasting along some twisties on a summer’s day with nothing but warm air, dead bugs and the sound of our exhaust for company.

It’s the same story every year, and a similar procedure as far as our fair-weather four-wheeled classics are concerned; as soon as the conditions decide to behave the bike comes out from storage and the process of making sure everything is tickety-boo begins again. From checking the oil and coolant to making sure the battery still has juice and the tyres are correctly inflateed, there are myriad boxes to tick before heading out for a sesh, one of which is checking and lubricating the chain.

A poorly maintained chain will play havoc with how your bike performs. From correct tension to proper lubrication it’s vitally important to keep the chain in top condition. There are umpteen options when it comes to picking the correct lube for your bike chain, however, from the type of chain fitted to the conditions you choose to ride in there’s a lube for every situation. So, we thought we would thin the pack a little and have a look at the one we’ve been using for a few years now: the Muc Off All-Weather Chain Lube.

The Product

Despite us waxing lyrical about summer riding we actually bought this lube when our only form of transport was a modified 1999 Honda Hornet 600 and we were riding to work every day, in all conditions. We needed a lube that would work regardless of what the weather was doing and having used Muc-Off products for years on mountain bikes prior to passing our bike test we thought we would give it a go as we knew and trusted the brand. We’ve had this can for so long that Muc-Off has actually changed the name from “Endurance” to “All-Weather”, testament to how long it lasts, but it’s the same stuff.

Muc-Off All-Weather Chain Lube is compatible for use with all standard O, X and Z-Ring motorcycle chains and has a water repellent, ceramic, non-fling formula that penetrates deep into the chain link creating a durable protective coating to prevent corrosion and wear in all conditions. It’s long lasting too which means fewer re-applications and that’s good because, let’s face it, nobody likes cleaning and lubing bike chains. Not only that but the lube includes a UV Dye, which means you can accurately get full coverage as well as noticing and wiping up any overspray using a UV torch. We do love a bit of science.

The Test

Having recently taken our bike for a dyno tuning session we thought it necessary to ensure the chain was in order and so after checking the tension was correct we treated it to some of the Muc-Off lube before it gets a full degrease in the coming weeks. The can comes with an extra long, removable nozzle to make application simple and getting in amongst the links to ensure full coverage was a doddle. Just make sure to wipe off any excess afterwards. The lube goes on thin and in liquid form and then congeals into a more sticky substance which clings to the chain. A couple of minutes later our chain was fully lubed and the bike was ready for some power runs.

The Result

The chain felt noticeably smoother after application and due to the sticky nature of the lube none of it was flung about under the seat or around the sprockets, a common problem we’ve encountered with other chain lubes. It was the same story when the bike was put through its paces on the dyno and the lube stayed put on the chain, exactly where it needs to be. Whether or not the 6 additional wheel horsepower gained from the remap had anything to do with the lube is doubtful but Muc-Off do claim that the ceramic additives in the product maximise horsepower. Whatever the case the bike was running incredibly well post application, not just on the dyno.

The Verdict – 4 out of 5

Muc-Off All-Weather Chain Lube does exactly what it says on the tin. Some people have complained of experiencing some flinging when using the product but that could be down to overspray as we experienced no such problems, just a silky smooth chain. The stuff smells incredible too. We’re not sure what benefit that provides but it certainly makes the job of re-lubing your bike chain more pleasurable, something that you won’t need to do as frequently either thanks to its long-lasting and waterproof nature. As mentioned earlier, we’ve been using Muc-Off products for years and judging by the quality of this particular lubricant we shall continue to do so.
