The Appeal

First introduced in 1960, the Mini Countryman hit the market as a highly presented, extended variation of the iconic little car. With decorative wooden trim, double barn-style rear doors and a longer chassis, these were a distinctly British iteration of the estate car - still endearingly small and carrying that friendly persona that made the Mini a fixture of the British network.

This example, based in France, has been subject to an incredibly thorough restoration job that’s left it in a highly polished fettle - perhaps one of the best we’ve seen at Car and Classic. These iterations of the classic Mini are highly prized, and an example like this one is not to be missed.

The History and Paperwork

  • Built at the Austin factory in Longbridge in 1969
  • French specification with left hand drive and KM odometer
  • First registered on 22nd of July 1969 in France
  • Sadly we don’t know much about this car’s pre-restoration history
  • Restored at a cost of over €28,500 at Oceane Classic Auto in Le Havre
  • Provided with a selection of invoices and a photographic record of the restoration
  • Judging from the paperwork, only 1,000 miles has been covered since the restoration
  • Indicates 66,224km - however this is on a five-figure odometer and can’t be authenticated
  • Will be supplied with a fresh contrôle technique

The Interior

  • Highly appointed blue-green interior
  • Fully retrimmed to an excellent period condition
  • Impressive Austin-branded steering wheel

Beautifully retrimmed, this Countryman’s interior is hewn in soft blue-green vinyl and fabric, which not only matches the exterior paintwork beautifully, but adds a very impressive character to the car’s cabin. It’s all highly detailed, with nothing breaking the car’s affable, charming character.

The seats are free of rips and tears, and very nicely finished in a rich, high-grain vinyl that looks soft and supple. The seat frames show some light patina, commensurate with their age, but this does nothing to detract from the interior spec. The matching door cards are equally well-presented, and the dashboard is a charming - albeit spartan - arrangement with an attractive combined binnacle.

The entire thing is clean and beautifully presented, with all indicators clean and easy to read, the controls in perfect working order and the Austin-branded wheel particularly attractive. The carpets - which, thanks to the extended deck, make quite a substantial part of the interior - are very well-kept with only very minor signs of wear. Much the same can be said for the headlining, which carries only light marks and discolouration. Meanwhile, the rear bay is clean, well-kept and looks solid.

The Exterior

  • Brightly presented blue - a bare metal respray
  • Contrasting ash-wood frame, freshly resealed and treated
  • Impressive restoration with a very highly presented underside

It’s not often that we see a Mini so beautifully presented - let alone the often well-used Countryman - and this one is a real head turner. Thanks to a highly comprehensive restoration, both the metalwork and ash woodwork are a real treat to the eyes.

The car’s essential profile - from its friendly front arrangement to the extended rear deck - are all present, correct, and beautifully kept. The bodywork has been nicely restored with no dents or dings we can highlight, and the paintwork is really looking the part. The car has only done around 1,000 miles since it was restored, which is clear upon visual inspection.

The chromework carries only the lightest signs of use, and the glasswork and lenses all present very cleanly with no chips or cracks. The Austin badging and barn door branding are a similarly attractive array.

The car is sitting on colour-matched disc wheels, which are bright and clean, and are shod in a full set of tyres that look to have plenty of tread.

Underneath, the Mini looks remarkable, with clean metalwork, suspension and exhaust all brightly presented. The restoration work has clearly made quite an impact, with the car looking close to how it would have looked rolling out of Longbridge.

The Mechanics

  • Highly presented engine bay, fully restored
  • Powered by the 998cc A-Series I4 engine
  • 4-speed manual transmission
  • Newly rewired

The A-Series engine in this Countryman looks superb, with the distinct green head of the Morris powerplant very cleanly presented. As with the car’s exterior, it’s all been very nicely restored - maintaining its period character while being free of any mechanical issues or cause for concern.

The car is reportedly starting first time, with no faults to report, and will be provided with a fresh contrôle technique. The car has been rewired, and the engine fully rebuilt, with all-new oils, filters and seals.

Summary

Impeccably presented, thoroughly restored and in great mechanical stead, this Countryman defies its venerable age and makes for a highly beguiling example of the British classic. These much-prized iterations of the Mini are a rare sight, and this one is in exceptional heritage condition.
