The Appeal
The pinnacle of motorsport? Quite possibly. The 1950s saw some truly special motor racing and some undeniably exquisite machines with one of the most esteemed of the era being the Scaglietti bodied Ferrari Mondial 500 grand prix cars, but with values of those reaching somewhere in the region of £5 million on the used market, those for a nostalgic slice of the historic Ferrari motorsport experience must draw their attention to the replica world, and on that front they come no finer than the Stan Daniels SD500 Mondial.
Built by automotive legend Stan Daniels in the late 1970s, these cars used high quality GRP fibreglass and Alfa four cylinder running gear; as the real SD500s were the first and only Ferrari to utilise four cylinder power, to make what can very easily be argued to be one of the best classic Ferrari replicas ever made. Overall 12 examples of the SD500 were complete, with commercial outfit Hawkridge buying the rights and taking over the process with just two cars being built solely by Stan himself. Amazingly the car we have here is one of those two, and is understood to be the first ever made.
Rare, beautiful, incredibly nostalgic. Presenting with a lovely gentle patina RRY 755R gives incredible classic racer vibes, and having been subject to something of a mechanical overhaul throughout its current ownership, will continue to draw smiles and turn heads at the hands of a new loving owner.

- Understood to have been the first of its kind built and one of just two built by Stan Daniels before construction was taken over by Hawkridge
- One of 12 cars finished in total
- Several magazine period magazines have featured the car with extensive spreads on the general build and details of the model
- Registered as an E.R.R.A. Mondial 500
- The car is UK registered and comes with a V5 registration document as we understand
- Dry stored throughout current ownership
The Interior
- Simple period correct racer style interior
- Genuine Ferrari Jaeger instrument cluster
- FIA fire extinguisher system installed for racing
Simple, yet effective. The interior of the SD500 heavily resembles that of the real thing and has a similar level of charm and 1950s patina to it. Two simple black Scheel racing bucket seats take precedence within the cabin and have worn their miles well, presenting with very limited signs of age and good strong bolstering.
A three spoke wood rimmed steering wheel sits proudly at the front of the cabin and resides in front of what must surely be a stand out point to note on the SD500. A genuine, original set of Jaeger, Ferrari clocks and gauges, preserved with a wonderful light patina to them, these really do look the part and help the car stand out as a truly top quality replica.
An FIA fire extinguisher system has been installed within the car in the case that the new owner wishes to take it trackside, with the primary extinguisher residing on the central interior tunnel behind the beautiful exposed gated manual gear shifter. In the name of practicality a small boot area is situated at the rear and at present holds a protective black cover which can be placed over the car if needed.
The Exterior
- Exceptional exterior styling based on the 1950s Ferrari racers
- Aston Martin wire wheels for a more period correct look
- Beautifully presented with a light patina
Very occasionally a car will sell itself simply on looks alone. Few and far between, they are usually classic Italian numbers more often than not, with a prancing horse badge sat proudly on the bonnet. Based on the legendary Ferrari racers of the 1950s, the SD500 Mondial replica is no exception to this notion. Thousands of man hours were spent crafting this into what is surely one of the finest looking replicas to have ever been made. With a fibreglass shell and a rigid hand built tubular chassis, RRY 755R can certainly be seen as a high ranker from an aesthetic perspective.
The bold red exterior paintwork is in fine fettle, standing today with just a gentle honest patina that plays well into the 1950s racer aesthetic. The same can be said for the external trim, badging and glass work which are all of a great standard. To complete the look, a set of Aston Martin wire wheels have been installed on the car and shod to thick tyres to fill out the arches and emit that vintage motorsport appearance.
Make no mistake, from an aesthetic standpoint, replicas seldom get better than this.
The Mechanics
- Alfa Romeo four cylinder engine
- 5 speed manual transmission
- Subject to extensive mechanical overhaul
The Ferrari racers on which this car was based were somewhat unusual from a mechanical perspective in that they were the first, and only Ferraris to utilise a four cylinder engine. Lampredi four cylinders were installed in the original Mondials and to replicate that the car we have here comes with a 2.0 litre Alfa Romeo DOHC four cylinder unit. Whilst original cars were equipped with 4 speed manuals, the car in question here has been fitted with a 5 speed alternative.
We are informed by the current custodian that the car has been subject to an extensive mechanical refurbishment throughout its current ownership, including an inlet manifold and carburetor rebuild, fitment of an electronic ignition and a rolling road tune and setup at Sanspeed, with 120HP being the reported figure from the car.
With just over 23 thousand miles on the clock the SD500 is merely run in, and having recently completed a trip to the Le Mans classic racing event; where it was displayed but not raced, prospective buyers can feel confident that this slice of Ferrari nostalgia is ready to conquer many more miles.
Summary
Quite often when we think of replica race cars one is led to think of a Ford Cortina derived creation that lacks any sort of real style or charm. This is not that.
What we have here is possibly one of the greatest Ferrari replicas ever built. One of just 12 SD500 reincarnations ever created, and one of two exclusively built by automotive engineer Stan Daniels before the rights and tubs were sold on, RRY 755R is arguably the ultimate when it comes to vintage motorsport replicas and signs of vintage 1950s racing nostalgia.
