Luxury coupés have long been a mainstay of the Mercedes-Benz model range, but the 1998 CL took the concept of a high-end and prestigious two-door to a whole new level.
Based on the platform of the W220 S-Class, the ‘C215’ as it was known internally was a stately two-door limo that was on a par with a Bentley or Aston Martin in terms of its performance and luxurious specification.
The CL 600 was the luxury flagship of the range. While not as outwardly quick as the CL55 AMG (though it was a close-run thing), the 600 used a glorious 5.8-litre V12 that was actually an extremely clever piece of engineering, using cylinder deactivation technology to only use six of the cylinders when running at cruising speeds or under low loads – all of which made it surprisingly efficient if you didn’t hammer it.
This example is a beauty. Finished in much-loved Brilliant Silver, the big old Benz is a majestic and sumptuously equipped machine that would have cost its owner over £100k when new, but today represents a ridiculous amount of car for the money. As evidenced in the service booklet it started life in Ireland, with a second owner in England, and the third in Northern Ireland, where it currently resides.

If you want a car that’s essentially as good as a car can get, and which will inevitably represent a sound long-term future investment, this will be a truly wonderful depreciation-proof experience and is incredibly well-equipped.
