The Appeal
George Brough's legendary motorcycles earned the moniker "the Rolls-Royce of motorcycles" for good reason, and remain among the most coveted machines on the scene. Genuine examples command extraordinary sums - so it's little wonder some skilled enthusiasts have started putting together evocative replicas. One of these with period-correct components is bound to turn heads - a great avenue into the Brough Superior mystique.
This 680 replica project has been built around a Triumph 1938 rigid-converted frame and is powered by a JAP 680cc side-valve 5/15 V-twin engine dated 1922 - a powerplant entirely in keeping with the Brough Superior ethos. The specification extends to a Sturmey Archer four-stud heavyweight gearbox, a Lucas 50-degree V-twin magneto, an Amal twin carburettor, and a Bonniksen Rotherhams 100mph speedometer - a particularly desirable period instrument. The exhausts have been carefully fabricated as a pattern to ensure correct alignment once the build is complete.
This is a non-running project, and further work is required to bring it to completion, including machining of the engine internals and externals, fitting of frame steering collars, and connecting nuts for the carburettor manifold. That said, the vendor states that the work carried out to date is of a high standard, and describes the motorcycle as a very beautiful and desirable-looking machine. For a builder with the skills and ambition to see it through, this is bound to be a very rewarding project.
