Lot 393
1968 Triumph 490cc T100R Daytona
Registration no. MDM 188G
Frame no. H65917 T100R
Engine no. T100R H65917
Few British motorcycles of the late 1960s can claim a competition pedigree as impressive as Triumph's celebrated Daytona. The model's name was adopted in 1966 following Buddy Elmore's remarkable victory in that year's Daytona 200 aboard a factory Triumph twin, with Gary Nixon repeating the achievement the following season en route to consecutive AMA championships. The Daytona quickly established itself as Triumph's premier sporting 500cc twin and remains one of the most desirable lightweight classics of the Meriden era.
By the time of the BSA-Triumph range revision in late 1970, the model had gained the excellent twin-leading-shoe front brake previously fitted to the 650cc machines, while the "Tiger" name was dropped and the designation simplified to T100R Daytona. However, worsening financial difficulties within the BSA-Triumph Group ultimately brought production to an end. Following the workers' occupation of the Meriden factory in 1973 and the subsequent restructuring of the company, the T100R Daytona was never reinstated, securing its place as one of the final and finest developments of Triumph's classic 500cc parallel twin.
Sadly offered following the passing of its owner in February 2025, the late owners widow has expressed her wish that the motorcycle be purchased by an enthusiast who will continue to enjoy and cherish it.
Presented in attractive green and black livery, the Daytona displays well and benefits from an extensive ownership and maintenance record spanning approximately twenty-five years.
Accompanying documentation includes a Triumph Owners Club dating certificate issued in 2000, confirming that this matching-numbers example was manufactured on 22 August 1968 and dispatched just two days later, on 24 August 1968, to Johnson Motors, Triumph's official West Coast distributor in the United States.
The history file contains a substantial collection of invoices and receipts documenting maintenance, parts purchases and ongoing care over many years. HPI records indicate that the motorcycle was first registered overseas before being imported into the UK. The current keeper acquired the machine on 1 July 2000, since when it has remained in long-term single ownership.
A desirable and increasingly collectible matching-numbers T100R Daytona from long-term family ownership, offered with V5C registration document, Triumph Owners Club dating certificate, HPI report, a substantial history file of receipts and invoices, and a useful selection of spare parts.
Following a period of inactivity, this motorcycle will require recommissioning and/ or restoration to a greater or lesser extent before returning to the road and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's completeness, history, authenticity, originality and mechanical condition prior to bidding.
