The Appeal 

BSA’s Gold Star achieved success on almost every racing surface, but perhaps its natural home was as a scrambler. This early 60s 500 was campaigned by talented Scottish racer Bob Ayres in the late 80s, notably achieving 2nd and 3rd places in successive annual pre-65 Scottish Championships. 
Naturally, in the hands of such a renowned scrambler, it has evolved considerably from its factory specification. It now sports a DBD ‘Development Big-Fin Design’ high performance, racing specification 500cc engine and uprated gearbox suitable for scrambling. 
The seller, Bob’s nephew, inherited this bike around 10 years ago. It has been carefully dry stored ever since, preserved in its post-racing condition complete with all the light signs of use. It is a very evocative machine and the question for the buyer will be whether to restore it or preserve all that history. 
The vendor tells us that it was last started around one year ago, so may need some recommissioning. With its provenance and specification, this is a very appealing historic racer. 

The History and Paperwork

  • Factory built on early 1960s according to seller

  • Acquired by current keeper from his uncle around 10 years ago 
  • Not road registered as it is a trials bike 

The Condition

  • Evocative racing bike with signs of use including dents and marks to tank and frame
  • Modified for competitive scrambling with lightweight red frame and other alterations as shown 
  • Aluminium tank with some aging and marks to BSA decals
  • Chrome wire wheels and knobbly tyres 
  • Fittings such as chromework, saddle and grips in good order as shown 
  • Buyers should expect some renovation and replacement due to longstanding storage

The Mechanics 

  • Fitted with DBD full alloy race specification BSA ‘DBD’ engine 
  • Uprated gearbox for trials and scrambling use
  • Last started one year ago 
  • Due to sparing use some recommissioning is likely required
