- Rare factory-fitted six-cylinder petrol engine

The Appeal
Those familiar with Series Land Rovers will appreciate that a little more grunt wouldn't go amiss. As rugged as the 2.25-litre petrol and diesel units were, by the time the Series III came along, these naturally aspirated four-cylinder engines lacked the horsepower to make these cars usable on increasingly fast-moving roads. Rover was well aware of this at the time, experimenting with its Buick-derived V8 in the Stage One and also a modified BMC/Leyland 2.6-litre straight-six for its long-wheelbase models. With 110 horsepower versus the 2.25 petrol's 77, the R6 engine offered a significant increase in performance.
Teething troubles meant only around 5,000 six-cylinder Series III 109s were sold, but these issues have long since been ironed out, making rare survivors truly one of the very best leaf-sprung Land Rovers money can buy. Here we have one of those cars, dating from 1981.
Offered in good overall condition and fitted with a corrosion-resistant galvanised chassis, this Series III would make a superb addition to any garage.
