The Appeal
A road-going version of the three-time Le Mans-winning D-Type, the XKSS was the sports car of choice for the 'King of Cool' himself - Steve McQueen.
Founded in 1968, Lynx Motors specialised in the restoration and maintenance of Jaguar C-Types, D-Types, and E-Types. Armed with an advanced understanding of exactly how these cars go together, Lynx used a mould from an original XKSS to create their first hand-built alloy reproduction.
These are not the typical evocations with glass fibre bodywork; a Lynx boasts pinpoint accuracy, closely replicating the way the XKSS was made and the materials and production techniques used by Jaguar at the time. The infamous Browns Lane Fire of 1957 destroyed nine of the planned twenty-five XKSS, built. Originals seldom come to market, and while JLR Classic did build the final nine 'Continuation' cars costing approximately two million pounds a piece, they could not be registered for the road.
This Lynx, on the other hand, certainly is road legal.
Constructed in 1997, this car represents a rare opportunity to acquire a professionally crafted XKSS with impeccable provenance and just one former registered keeper. The car comes with a substantial history file spanning back to its original build, including a photographic record amassed while under construction.
The current owner notes this as the most challenging car in their collection, hinting at the raw, uncompromising performance that makes these vehicles so desirable.

The word 'Iconic' is bandied about all too readily these days, but no more fitting word exists to describe the XKSS. Built from surplus D-Types left over from the racing programme, the XKSS's curves were the product of cutting-edge wind tunnel testing, a testament to the fact that some of the greatest designs come about when form follows function.
As you will have observed from the photographs, this Lynx presents beautifully. Its aluminium monocoque tub is in very good order, as is its lightweight tubular subframe. The interior is impressively period-correct, complete with oversized Smiths instrumentation, age-appropriate Lucas switchgear, and a wood-rimmed sports steering wheel. The leather upholstery has accrued a gentle patina with age, making this car look that bit more like one of the original XKSS from the late 1950s.
Specifically installed radiator blanket to use manually when running in cold conditions
While most jaguars used simple SU carburettors, a brace of 45mm Webers really lets that venerable old XK engine breathe, so it's no wonder this was the fuelling setup of choice for the D-Type and by association, the XKSS. That configuration has been replicated here, offering a period-correct and utterly exhilarating experience that tests the mettle of even the most seasoned drivers.
