Think of the 1980s, and there’s a good chance the Porsche 911 will spring to mind. Although it continues in production to this day, few cars have stronger associations with any era than the 911 and the Eighties. To see one is to be transported back in time to a simpler and more forgiving time (though perhaps not in terms of its handling) when sheer driving pleasure was generated by a rear-mounted 3.2-litre flat six and four sticky wide tyres.
This particular 911 Carrera is a Targa Sport model with a G50 gearbox, and it’s some paintwork refurbishment away from being a truly outstanding example. The under-bonnet storage bay is typically loose lined with carpet in extremely good condition, with what appears to be an original sticker still attached to the bonnet liner. The interior carpets are also in very good order, with the door cards looking immaculate. The navy blue leather seats have shrugged off decades of use, although the driver’s seat bolster is worn.
In the main, this symphony in blue has worn exceptionally well, retaining numerous original details and switchgear. Even the Blaupunkt stereo appears to be more traditional than it actually is, offering DAB radio and Bluetooth output through custom-fitted speakers and amps. The original Blaupunkt head unit will be included if desired, and the quintet of cassette storage boxes still feature behind the gearlever. The semi-submerged rear bucket seats show few signs of use, and the lift-out central roof section provides open-topped motoring with few compromises.
Having owned the car for the last three years and spent over £15,000 on it in that time, the current keeper says this 911 “drives, looks and sounds great,” describing it as “a proper head-turner.” It would certainly have turned heads at Le Mans, where a previous owner’s father reportedly completed this uniquely gruelling race twice in this very car.
The only part of this vehicle which will require any attention from future owners is the original silver paintwork. There are early signs of bubbling around the wheelarches and some rough surfaces around/inside the door sills, not to mention a deeply scored front bumper. Indeed, the current owner readily acknowledges that the paintwork is one of the few areas not already addressed.
In the main, this is a well maintained example of a classic 911, with its original whale tail and rear window wiper arm supplied alongside their more discreet fitted replacement. The full-width reflective Porsche band between the rear lights is pure Eighties, whereas the new windscreen is emblematic of a car whose maintenance has been continued regardless of cost or complexity.
Following a comprehensive restoration a decade ago, this is a time-capsule 911 with a wealth of mechanical modernisations. As examples, the brakes have been refurbished right down to new brake lines, while new door/window/targa seals have been fitted. Replacement Pirelli P Zero tyres adorn refurbished wheels, with £15,000 and hundreds of hours of labour invested in the car during the current owner’s three-year tenure. image.png1.31 MB
