The Appeal
The Austin 7 was to England what the Model T was to the USA. Revolutionary and yet oh-so-affordable, it was this that brought the automobile proper to the masses, leaving behind a clumsy clutter of economy cars and cyclecars. Of the 'Baby Austins', the 'Chummy' Tourer holds a special place in the hearts of pre-war enthusiasts. This particular car is the 'interim' model, combining 6-inch brakes and a 3-piece bonnet with the earlier AD body, which makes for a particularly appealing specification.
This 1926 example has been the subject of an extensive rebuild carried out over some 13 years by its current owner. Engine, body, and front axle all carry their correct original numbers, with even the block and flywheel retaining the original engine stampings. The car has been fitted with a new interior, refurbished side screens, and new tyres, while the addition of trafficators and brake lights running on 12 volts offers that little bit of extra practicality without spoiling the car's vintage character.
The original hood and bag are included, though the vendor notes these show their age. Reported unused since the rebuild's completion, this Chummy is described as ready to enjoy straight away. Accompanying the car is a large box file of history containing invoices dating back to 1945, letters from previous owners, old MOTs, and a wealth of photographs documenting the restoration, a fine provenance for an honest little car.1926-Austin-7-Chummy-2.jpg321.96 KB
