The Appeal
The Mercedes-Benz 170 V was a landmark model for Stuttgart, an accessible yet beautifully engineered car that proved so successful it was revived after the war to restart Mercedes-Benz production. Genuine pre-war Cabriolet examples are increasingly rare survivors, and this 1939 W136 is a well-preserved example.
This car has been in the same family for over 45 years. It was restored during the 1970s by the current owner's father, who ran his own automotive workshop and is described as having been thorough in his approach. The vendor notes the body was lifted from the frame and the car was stripped to its individual components before being carefully reassembled and repainted. Registered in 1978 following the rebuild, it was used extensively during the summer months and enjoyed regularly until 2022.
In 2018, the engine was removed and sent to Stuttgart for a rebuild, reflecting the family's commitment to maintaining the car properly. Following a period of storage, a recommissioning service was reportedly carried out in late summer 2025, and the vendor reports it now starts easily and runs very well. Accompanied by extensive documentation and coming from the collection of a dedicated Mercedes-Benz enthusiast, this is a well-documented, road-ready pre-war Cabriolet suited to shows, tours, and summer motoring.
