The Appeal
Launched in 1950, the Ford Consul is widely considered to be the first modern British Ford, with monocoque construction, overhead-valve engines and independent front suspension. While most examples were four-door saloons, a limited number of estates were produced by Surrey-based coachbuilder Abbott. This charming and exceptionally well-presented car has covered just over 4,000 miles since 2010 and is claimed to retain its original interior.
The Bristol Fawn exterior is bright and free of visible corrosion or damage, as are the chrome components and details, including the trafficators, period-style chrome headlight cowls, chrome exterior light and chrome roof rack. The car’s character is enhanced by its period-correct windscreen peak, extra driving lights, distinctive side-opening rear door and 1953 tax disc in the windscreen.
Underneath, there appear to be no obvious visible signs of repairs or welding, and the sills are claimed by the seller to be original. The red leather interior with front and rear bench seats is claimed to be original with the exception of replacement carpets. The car features the later-style asymmetrical body-coloured dashboard with chrome ‘Consul’ script and with speedometer, ammeter and fuel gauge positioned above the steering column. A period-correct MW/LW radio and Smiths combined oil pressure and water temperature gauge sit on the full-width parcel shelf, and the umbrella-style pull lever can be found beneath. The interior also features a temperature gauge next to the passenger side sun visor.
The car is fitted with a later 1.7-litre engine from the Mark 3 Ford Zephyr engine, fitted with a sportier camshaft and Weber carburettor. Its gearbox is fitted with overdrive. This is an opportunity to acquire a truly rare and characterful car that is sure to make every journey fun. image.png1.14 MB
