The Appeal
Ever wondered what links His Majesty King Charles III, Mick Jagger and Peter Sellers?
All three have owned Aston Martin DB6 Volantes. A car fit for Royalty, and showbiz royalty alike; Paul McCartney is said to have recorded part of 'Hey Jude' in a DB6. Twiggy had one too...
The DB6 was to be the last car in the celebrated 'DB' lineage for some time. It was also the final Aston to feature the Carrozzeria Touring design language, characterised by hooded headlamps and a barred radiator grille. A kamm tail was introduced to improve high-speed stability, while a more rigid chassis was devised by introducing steel box section to the typical Superleggera tubular frame of earlier models.
In all, just 140 examples of the DB6 Mk1 Volante were ever made, and here we have a particularly fine example that was formerly the property of musician, broadcaster and classic car enthusiast Jools Holland.
Chassis '3659/R' was completed on 26 October 1967 and supplied via H.R. Owen (Bradway Autos) on 17th November the same year. Factory options included an automatic gearbox, power-assisted steering, chrome wheels with three-ear hubcaps, 3.54:1 limited-slip differential, powered aerial, and front seatbelts. It was originally finished in Autumn Gold and first registered as 'OYV 162F' in London.
Jools Holland's ownership of the DB6 is well-documented. He had the car repainted in purple, also fitting a manual transmission, which remains in the car today. When once interviewed, he said:
"A few years ago I bought an Aston Martin convertible: a DB6 Volante. And I remembered that when I was a boy, and we lived in a tiny house in Greenwich without a bathroom or any heating, my dad, who's dead now, bought me a toy model of the same car. And I realised that's why I'd picked that car. So I decided to drive my car back to my old neighbourhood. It was a dark, misty autumn evening and I parked outside my old house. There was no one around. I suddenly imagined my front door opening and my younger self coming down the path and me opening the car door and saying: "Hey, it's me! Jump in!"
In subsequent ownership, the DB6 underwent a bodywork restoration, re-spray, and various other improvements with LT Classics of London. in April 2017, RS Williams Ltd carried out extensive works, including fitting an RSW uprated front anti-roll bar, RSW rear springs and an RSW rear telescopic shock absorber conversion. They also installed new carpets, reconditioned the upholstery, rebuilt both window lift mechanisms, fitted five new chrome wire wheels, a new battery, and carried out a full service. This amounted to a total of £33,533.
As the photographs attest, the car presents very well indeed. Owing to their immense rarity, DB6 Volantes seldom come to market, especially such well-sorted, storied examples as this.
