The Appeal
The original Range Rover is effectively the car that single-handedly created the luxury off-road segment. Early examples, especially those right at the start of production, are deeply prized by collectors and enthusiasts alike, and they don't come much earlier than this: the tenth production vehicle built, carrying chassis number 55, with production starting at chassis number 46. Built in September 1970 in Masai Red, it just missed out on being allocated as a press vehicle.
Originally bought new and exported to Australia as a personal import via Western Automobiles of Chelmsford, this very early Range Rover has found its way back to the UK, and is reportedly a very solid car - no doubt aided by its time in the dry Australian climate. The interior, while well used, retains its original seats (with the plastic front seats beneath the cloth covers), along with the original rear seat and headlining, which is a notable survival for a vehicle now over 55 years old.
On the mechanical front, the car benefited from an overhaul a few years ago encompassing a rebuilt engine, refreshed suspension, and a new clutch, all with fewer than 5,000 miles covered since. A Range Rover from so early in the lineage is guaranteed to earn plenty of attention, and it's very well deserved. 99745bd9-bbae-4a72-b918-35da9c8f488a.jpg219.86 KB
