The Appeal

The VW customisation scene remains as vibrant as ever, and the builds are getting wilder each passing year.

This Type 2 van has been comprehensively re-engineered while keeping its original Westfalia interior intact. Most modified Bay Windows have been stripped out and rebuilt inside; this one has not. It still has the charm and layout of a proper Westfalia camper, but beneath the surface sits a body-dropped and channelled shell, four-corner hydraulic suspension, a fully uprated front end and braking system, and a supercharged 1,776cc flat-four engine.

The vendor provides the following detail on the engine specifications:

"Supercharged 1776cc flat four running 8 to 10 psi of boost with methanol injection. The methanol system cools the intake charge and suppresses detonation, the same principle used in high-boost competition engines, allowing the motor to make real power reliably. Estimated output is circa 145 bhp and 160 lb ft of torque, against the factory 1600's 50 bhp and 78 lb ft: roughly three times the power and double the torque, delivered from low revs The result is a Bay Window that cruises at motorway speeds fully loaded and genuinely keeps pace with modern traffic."

Imported from California in 2014, this left-hand-drive 1971 example was rebuilt in the UK over a number of years by Evil Ben's in Truro, with the front-end and braking setup handled by Type 2 Detectives. The build is thoroughly documented with a photographic record, invoices, and a VW Heritage birth certificate. Further upgrades, including the supercharger system have been carried out since.

Included in the sale is a custom Kanvasworks awning. For a buyer seeking a finished, documented, one-off Bay Window build, this is a very special thing.
