The Appeal
For 70s buyers, the Mercury Cougar XR7 offered a more luxurious and more grown-up alternative to its Mustang cousin, but one with identical running gear. Despite that appeal and the classic long-nosed looks, it was a rare choice with just 1,929 registered in 1972.
The vendor says, and a quick chassis confirms that the UK-registered car is a genuine XR7 convertible with the rumbly 5.7L 351CI Cleveland V8. It arrived here in 2019 and with the current keeper earlier this year. Since acquiring it, he tells us he has focused on ensuring it is reliable by completing a long list of mechanical work, including the fuel system, ignition, cooling, and charging systems. This is a car that is driven regularly — the vendor uses it for commuting, long journeys and car shows, and states that he wouldn't hesitate to drive it anywhere.
The paintwork is presentable but shows imperfections, and there is some rust to the outer sill panels, though the structural areas are reported to be solid. The electric convertible roof is said to be relatively new and operates correctly. Several electrical items have simultaneously lost power, a fault that has not yet been investigated.
An extensive history file accompanies the car, containing US Certificates of Title, a historical vehicle report, workshop invoices and parts receipts spanning both UK and US ownership. This is a usable, mechanically sorted XR7 with genuine rarity on these shores — ready to enjoy now, with scope for the next owner to attend to the remaining cosmetic and electrical details.

“This is an honest, genuine XR-7 Convertible that’s been maintained with reliability in mind rather than restored to concours condition. It starts well, drives well and comes with a large history file and evidence of significant mechanical work. It isn’t perfect, and I’ve tried to describe it as accurately as possible so buyers know exactly what they’re looking at. It’s the sort of car that attracts attention wherever it goes, and I’d be happy to answer any questions or provide additional photos and videos.”
