The Appeal

There are classic touring bikes, and then there’s BMW’s R100T and R100RT. These big, comfortable 980cc bikes are so good at what they do that close to 50 years after this tidy 1979 R100RT left the works, it would still be a relaxing way to cover long distances.

The RT got the wind-deflecting fairing and rear disc brake, but was otherwise similar to the 100T. Both are fitted with the 980cc 2cyl Boxer engine and a 5spd gearbox, part of a mechanical mix noted for its reliability.

This low-mileage bike was acquired by the vendor in 2020 and has been used sparingly ever since. It is in really good condition, the dark brown paintwork with its red pinstriping showing few signs of age. Likewise, the chromework is bright, and the fairing and fittings, like the BMW panniers, present well. It benefits from a raft of recent mechanical and other work, including new seals, piston rings, valve guides, filters, battery and tyre inner tubes.
