The Appeal
Over a remarkable 18-year production, the R107 became the centre of the marque's reputation - and what a car to do it. This rugged, straight-faced roadster was loaded with executive comfort and muscle. Big proportions, a sumptuous cabin and a big engine; an international formula for an eminently drivable car.
The 420SL, introduced in 1985, is the rarest of the R107 series-production variants, offering effortless torque from the 4.2-litre V8. It occupies a sweet spot in the range: more powerful and refined than the six-cylinder cars, and considerably scarcer, with an oh-so-pleasing burble that's bound to stir an enthusiast.
This 1988 right-hand drive example in Signal Red has covered just under 64,000 miles and comes accompanied by a substantial history file. The vendor reports it has been dry stored and used only in summer months during their six years of ownership, covering a mere 2,200 miles in that time. Maintenance has been entrusted to marque specialists, with notable work including an extensive check and overhaul carried out in 2025. image.png1.43 MB

✓ We want a smooth transaction just as much as you do and as such we run all UK-registered cars and motorbikes for sale on Car & Classic through an online HPI check to verify that they show no insurance database markers for damage or theft, and have no finance owing, allowing you to bid with confidence.
✓ We also check whether vehicles are recorded as being written off as part of an insurance total loss claim at the time an advert is placed on Car & Classic and we helpfully provide write-off category labels (Cat C/D/S/N) for your assistance. However, the presence or absence of a label does not guarantee the vehicle’s status and it is always worthwhile carrying out your own full vehicle history check before making an offer on a vehicle.
✓ Buyers are responsible for vehicle collection
