The Appeal
The 928 may have seemed an unusual choice for 1978 European Car of the Year, but it’s easy to see why the judges selected it, and why it remains the only sports car to ever receive the title. Conceived as a 911 replacement, but finding its natural home as a grand tourer, Porsche’s first front-engined V8 is about as close to motoring perfection as anyone who needs to get from A to B as quickly and as comfortably as possible could reasonably expect.
Nearly 50 years on from that title, the 928 is still being cited as one of the best sports cars ever built. Here is a chance to find out why with a very tidy example of the later S4, which added more power and smoother lines to the original mix. Finished in Diamond Blue metallic with Linen leather interior, it features low mileage for a 928 and has been lavished with investment in recent years.
The current keeper acquired the car in 2024 and says he has spent £16,000 on it, largely through specialist Porsche and classic repairers. Work has included £7,000 of mechanical attention, including service and cambelts in 2025, plus bodywork and paintwork rectification. The car is also fitted with a number of desirable GTS features, which can be seen in the photos and are detailed below.
Accompanied by its original Porsche book pack, stamped service book and a weighty history file, this is a well-documented 928 S4 on which many of the expensive jobs these cars can require have already been undertaken. It comes to market with lengthy MOT.

It's great to see you have shown the real world of owning a car of this age and not like some on here! Advertising what patch boys used to sell on their forecourts in the 80's that where full of filler, cardboard and paper with an shiny paint job!! I've been seeing a lot of cars on here that have had that 80's work done over the past year and God help the new owners!! You've done nice work and Hope you get a good price!! I've had a couple of these and enjoyed them, plus they are good on fuel. Bob

SellerThanks for the message. Yes I was one of those new owners a few years ago and got caught out a bit. Rather than choosing to patch things up as cheaply as possible I went all in with 928 specialists to make the car as good as I could, as I intended to keep it for a long time and to be useable as a daily, I'll be using it today. Petrol much cheaper than diesel!!! Whoever gets to own the car next will have the benefit of all the work I've had done and just get in it and enjoy. Andy

BidderHi, Lovely car! Has the oil leak from the MOT been repaired please, and if not, where is the leak ? Do you know if it is a simple seal, or something more complex ?

SellerPredictive txt on last reply!! See follow up where Loe Bank finally sorted it as power steering fluid had slight drip and also sorted Aircon which had been a recurring issue (still blows cold and has been great all summer in the hot weather). As I have previously mentioned anything that has needed doing it has gone straight to Chris at Loe Bank to be looked at and sorted.

Hi, beautiful car, the colour combination in particular is very striking. Can I ask a couple of questions about the recent work please. 1) Was the flexplate tension released/checked, and was crankshaft end-float measured during the recent work? If so, what was the measurement? 2) Was the water pump replaced when the cambelt was done in March 2025, and were the tensioner and rollers renewed/overhauled? 3) Would you have any photos of the sills/underside before the 66 hours of bodywork? Was that to cut out and repair corrosion? Any photos of exactly what was done please?
