The Appeal
If you haven’t set your plans yet for the 2026 Festival of the Unexceptional, let us help you. This time warp Mk2 Astra is surely a shoo-in for show stardom. Except, like many of the cars at FOTU, it is far from unexceptional…
The Mk2 Astra arrived during Vauxhall’s 80s Imperial Phase, a slippery family hatchback that owed more than a passing nod to Alfa Romeo’s Alfasud, both in the way it drove and how it looked. Known for its fizzy engines and great handling, the Mk2 is the hidden gem of everyday 80s classics.
That said, you’ll struggle to find one that isn’t a GTE. So we laud this highly original, low-mileage 1.3 GL. It must be one of the best, if not the best, of the handful of remaining cars. As the photos show, it is remarkably preserved both inside and out. This is likely due to the current keeper’s fastidious care, as described below. It’s a story also borne out by the MOT history, which shows a single advisory for a tyre since 2006. The current test runs to the end of May 2027, again with no advisories.
Rarer than a Ferrari and, for many, far more interesting, this wonderful little car deserves an equally caring new keeper for the first time in 33 years.
The vendor says:
“No faults runs lovely and completely standard. Absolutely wonderful.”

The vendor says:
“This Astra has been in my grandmother’s ownership since 1990 and has been cherished throughout its life. To the best of my knowledge, it has spent virtually its entire life stored in a heated garage, where it was protected with blankets over both the exterior and interior to preserve its condition. The car was never used as everyday transport. It was driven only occasionally, primarily for short daytime outings and the monthly Sunday paper run. It was never intentionally taken out in poor weather, rain, or during the evening, and was always returned to its garage after use. More than just a car, it was something my grandmother genuinely loved and took great pride in owning. Much of the time she would simply sit in it in the garage, enjoying and appreciating it as part of her life. That level of care and affection is reflected in the remarkable condition the car remains in today. Sadly, due to health reasons, the time has come for the car to find a new home. It deserves to be owned by someone who will appreciate it in the same way and continue to preserve this exceptionally well-cared-for example for years to come.”
