- Late first-generation Toyota MR2 AW11, combining compact dimensions with a mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive layout
- Acquired by the seller in 2019 and covered only around 2,000 miles since 2021
- Dry-stored when not in use
- Enhanced with side skirts and upgraded alloy wheels
- MOT valid until 18 August 2027
The Appeal
The original Toyota MR2 brought genuinely exotic mechanical thinking to an affordable sports car. Launched in 1984 and arriving in the UK the following year, its compact two-seat body placed the engine behind the occupants and drove the rear wheels, creating a layout more commonly associated with considerably more expensive machinery. The formula was sufficiently convincing to earn the MR2 Japan’s Car of the Year award for 1984-85.
By the end of the decade, the first-generation AW11 had established a strong reputation for its light weight, responsive handling and eager 1.6-litre 16-valve engine. UK-market cars produced 122bhp, modest by modern standards but more than enough to make good use of the MR2’s compact dimensions and mid-engined balance.
This 1989 example was acquired by the seller in 2019, with paperwork showing that its previous keeper had purchased it from Milestone Classics in 2017. It has covered only around 2,000 miles since 2021 and has reportedly been dry-stored when not in use.
Finished in white and enhanced with side skirts and upgraded alloy wheels, it presents with a slightly more purposeful appearance than standard while retaining the unmistakable wedge-shaped character of the original MR2. With a fresh MOT until August 2027 and relatively limited recent use, this late AW11 is ready to return to more regular enjoyment.
