The Appeal

Were you team VW or team Peugeot? Like Blur vs Oasis or Arsenal vs Man United, you had to pick a side when it came to the business of choosing your hot hatchback during the late '80s and early '90s. For those Gallic-ally inclined, we've got a treat for you.

This 1990 'Phase 1.5' Peugeot 205 GTI combines the earlier amber indicators with the later Phase 2 dashboard and grey interior trim. It has been in the current owner's hands since February 2005, when it was purchased as a 1.6 GTI with a broken engine. In the two decades since, it has been thoughtfully developed around a Peugeot 405 Mi16 engine and gearbox, with the conversion carefully executed using a purpose-built wiring loom, a 13-row oil cooler, a stainless steel exhaust system, and the standard Mi16 ECU.

The chassis has received equal attention, with uprated suspension, brakes and drivetrain components fitted throughout. Inside, Peugeot 309 GTI Goodwood seats have been fitted front and rear, while the standard 1.9 GTI wheels have been recently powder-coated and are shod with near-new Avon ZV7 tyres. The paintwork presents well. Garage stored over winters and covering limited mileage in recent years, the vendor states that it drives very well, ready to meet its next custodian.
