The Appeal
Like its Beetle predecessor, the Karmann-built Gold convertible is a paen to the art of building a drop top car to endure. The job was done so well that the Mk1 outlasted its tin top cousin by 10 years.
In GTI spec as here these cars represent a clever buy because you get sun worshipping for four plus the verve of the later 1.8L Mk1 hot hatch. The vendor clearly thinks so because he has hung onto this factory standard 1993 car since 2007. The car is solid and tidy, with scope for the buyer to make it better. There are even some useful spares, including a set og BBS rims, to make that job easier.
The large history file shows regular attention. Notable highlights are a new roof around 10 years ago, new injectors, battery, starter motor and fuel filter and welding repairs. The current MOT runs to December 2026. Arriving on the market just in time for summer, this car could be used and enjoyed and then improved over winter.
The vendor says:
“Great classic to drive, reliable and a real head turner, stunning example with a small amount of TLC. Classic 1990s GTI power and feels like a real driving car experience. No fancy electronics to take away the real thrill of a drive. It's an honest car with years of love and historical paperwork, but it’s time for it to go to a VW fan and enthusiast.”
