The Appeal
We have to pity Porsche’s 1980s bean counters. With sales faltering, what they needed was a refresh of the 944. What the engineers delivered was essentially a brand new car, one that shared just 20% of components with the 944. It was called the 968 and is the ultimate version of these highly regarded front-engined, transaxle sports cars.
Most 968 cabriolets went to the USA, with just a handful produced in RHD for the UK-market. Even rarer is this car’s versatile Tiptronic auto, a forerunner of the now de rigeur sequential auto boxes fitted to modern sports cars. Finished in rare Amethyst Purple metallic with a full grey leather cabin featuring optional sports seats, it is a really tidy example of these capable 3L 4cyl Porsches.
It has also been very well maintained. The history file is amongst the most comprehensive we’ve seen in a while, showing regular maintenance and servicing by main dealers and well-regarded specialists like Hartech up to 104,583 miles. It is now showing 104,779 miles. The last service included belts. The current MOT runs to late June 2026 with no advisories. The joy of the 968 is that it is so usable and rewarding. This car looks perfect for long and short road trips.
