The Appeal
As the last of the air-cooled 911s, there are nostalgic reasons to love the 993. But there are plenty of logical reasons too, because Porsche virtually reinvented the car, changing 80% of the parts, most notably the multi-link rear suspension from the 989, a set-up so good that it went on to underpin the 996. Those changes, particularly that one, make the 993 arguably the best-driving 911 of the air-cooled era.
This early 993 is classically finished in black with matching roof and detailed with a smart set of dark grey ‘Turbo Twist’ alloys and neat ‘basket handle’ spoiler. The condition is impressive, helped by low mileage and recent clay bar treatment. The 3.6L flat six is paired with the firm’s versatile 4spd Tiptronic automatic, making this car a good trans-continental tourer.
The vendor acquired the car in 2020. He tells us that it comes with good service history from main dealers and specialists. This includes a health check by specialist Hartech, returning 190 psi compression across all cylinders and a clean bore check. Recent work extends to new ignition leads, new tyres, and an inspection and upgrade of the wiring loom. The bumpers received a paintwork refresh in 2023. In 2020/ around 2,000 miles ago, the brake pads and shock absorbers were replaced. The current MOT runs to June 2027 with no advisories. This is a very tidy and well-presented example of the much-lauded 993.
The vendor says:
“Drives like new. Very good; one of the best in the UK.”
