The Appeal
The second-generation Mercedes-Benz CLK, known by its W209 designation, arrived in 2002 as a replacement for the W208. The Cabriolet followed shortly afterwards, retaining the coupé's four-seat layout but adding a powered fabric roof. It was aimed primarily at buyers wanting a comfortable, relatively compact Mercedes for longer journeys rather than a dedicated sports car.
The W209 was offered with a broad range of engines during its production run, including four-cylinder petrols and diesels, V6 petrols and, higher up the range, V8s. But it’s the 320 that’s regarded as the sweet spot of the range – the M112 V6 developing a healthy 221bhp and backed up by a wonderful exhaust note, yet without the extortionate running costs of the V8 line-up.
This car comes from long-term ownership, with only one keeper change (between spouses) prior to the current owner, who acquired the car from a deceased estate to add to his collection of nineties and 2000s modern classics. But, due to some imminent and unexpected life changes, he’s downsizing the fleet, so keep an eye out for other cars of a similar ilk on Car&Classic over the coming weeks.
The CLK is presented in lovely condition throughout, painted in rare Ice Blue Metallic, with no evidence of ever having required any welding; straight, clean panels and a lovely Ivory leather interior. A family-friendly four-seat convertible that would have been a very expensive car when new, it’s now a brilliant opportunity to get your hands on a sleek, stylish and handsome boulevard cruiser.
