The Appeal
When the Suzuki Ignis came out in 2000, there was little to initially suggest this car would become a hot hatchback. Slotting into the range between the Alto and Liana, the Ignis was a lightweight hatchback with modest specifications – which turned out to be the ideal underpinnings for a sporty version a few years later. Weighing just 945 lb and powered by a twin-cam 1.5-litre engine, the resulting Swift Sport offered superior performance to many contemporary rivals, while its roadholding was honed in the Junior World Rally Championship.
This particular Ignis Sport is an immaculately presented 2004 example, finished in Silky Silver metallic paint which still shines nicely according to the current owner. The wheels are in particularly good order with no marks, while the underside is reportedly “rust free and like new”. Visually, the Sport is instantly distinguishable from lesser Ignis models, with a full body kit including some fairly prominent side skirts, a roof spoiler and matte black ten-spoke alloy wheels. The cabin is enlivened by Recaro seats with yellow mesh head restraint inserts, and carbon fibre-effect binnacle/dashboard inserts.
Sporting credentials notwithstanding, this car is a true time capsule. An incredibly low mileage of just 17,761 means the beige fabric seats have barely been sat in and the interior still reportedly has a new car aroma to it. The dashboard and interior surfaces show minimal marks or scrapes, and while the steering wheel exhibits some signs of wear, the white-faced dials behind it look as good as new, as do the rear carpets and boot fabrics.
