The Appeal
While its rivals tended towards firm and sporting, the beautiful Pininfarina-designed Type 939 Spider was built to be more about comfort, quality and long distance drives. This 2.2L JTS is all about exactly that because it is that rarest of UK-registerd Spiders - it has the firm’s clever clutchless Selespeed gearbox.
As enthusiasts will know, that option wasn’t available onm UK RHD cars. This one has it because it began life in Dublin, where it was among the last 939s registered before production ended for good. It arrived in the UK in 2017 and with the current keeper in 2020, who bought it from specialist Veloces. Over its 16 year life it has been used regularly but sparingly. The mileage is a shade over 70,000 miles and supported by MOT and servicing records. The regular maintenance has been by main dealers and specialist with the most recent attention in December 2025, since when the car has covered around 1,000 miles. The current MOT runs to November 2026. We are told that the two rear tyres were recently replaced.
Smartly presented in silver with black roof and blue leather, this Spider dials up the visual drama with a set of attractive 19in ‘teledials.’ Inside and out it is in good order, with a few signs of age to the usual areas such as driver’s bolster and front nearside wheel rim.
The Spider is one of the prettiest of the raft of modern classic convertibles. This car’s rare specification makes it ideal for European or UK touring.
The vendor says:
“This Spider stands out on a number of points: It has a Selespeed gearbox - This was never sold as an option in the UK - There may be only a handful in the country - If you want an automatic gearbox in a 2.2l engine in a Spider JTS, it is either this or try to find one of the sall number of others in the UK The wheels are an upgrade from the standard spec and are very pretty It is one of the last Spiders ever made by Alfa Romeo. Manufacturing stopped 8 months after this was first registered. The colour is great, although I guess that is subjective.”

does the electric hood work properly?
MikeBor••••
SellerIt does with the one glitch that I put in the description. Unaided, the hood catches on the passenger headrest. It only takes a push from a finger to clear it but it does catch. I looked it up online. It was gong to be my next project, especially now that it's sunny. It could be that a tensioning spring has disconnected or broken. I have not fixed it though

BidderI believe these are “Prodrive” wheels and red calipers - a big step up from teledial options. The Pele Frau leather means electric adjustable seats with memory too.
MikeBor••••
SellerYou are correct on both counts, Steve. The seats are electric and have three saveable positions. The wheels are Prodrive, rather than teledial.
