The Appeal

Much like the De Tomaso Pantera, Iso Grifo, and Bizzarrini 5300 GT, the Intermeccanica Omega combines Italian sports car design with American muscle. This extremely rare grand tourer, with only around 33 examples ever produced, combines the elegant coachbuilt bodywork of Italy with the reliable power of Ford V8 technology. The collaborative design by Robert Cumberford and Franco Scaglione, with engineering input from Frank Reisner and John Crosthwaite, created a unique transatlantic masterpiece.
This particular 1968 example has been meticulously restored to its original glory, finished in its factory Gemma Green paintwork with period-correct brown leather interior. The car's Shelby-specification Ford 289ci V8 engine provides impressive performance credentials, while its comprehensive documentation, including the original American Title and detailed restoration photos, confirms its provenance and authenticity.

For collectors seeking a rare, drivable classic that represents the best of both European and American automotive traditions, this Intermeccanica Omega presents a compelling opportunity.

The Mechanics

  • 4.7-litre (289ci) Ford V8 engine
  • BorgWarner four-speed T-10 type manual gearbox
  • Engine to Shelby specification with 4-barrel Holley carburettor
  • Engine rated at 271 hp SAE gross (according to Shelby Hi-Po 289 specifications)
  • Engine professionally overhauled during restoration
  • Transmission reported to be solid and functioning correctly
  • Disc brakes fitted all round
  • Independent front fork suspension
  • Approximate top speed of 180-190 km/h
  • Unladen weight of approximately 1,450 kg
While few will be familiar with the ultra-rare Omega, it's likely you'll know the powertrain, which closely resembles that found in cars produced by Shelby American in period. The 289ci Ford engine is rated at 271 hp SAE gross (according to Shelby Hi-Po 289 specifications), meaning this svelte Italianesque coupé motors on to an impressive approximate top speed of 180-190 km/h. As shown in the photographs, the engine compartment presents exceedingly well and looks very period-correct.
