The Appeal

With just 309 factory SS100 cars leaving the works between 1935 and 1939, demand for these beautiful cars has always outstripped supply. This 1936 car is likely the closest next best thing because it is one of an extremely small number of replica cars created by Swiss SS guru Wally Vorlaufer, former Chairman of the SS Register of the JCNR and widely regarded as one of the foremost authorities on these cars.

This car began life in 1936 as an SS Saloon, sold new to Lt Col Starkey via Henly's in London. It subsequently passed through the hands of Graham Macdonald, a Jaguar enthusiast who envisioned a touring body conversion but ultimately sold the project onward. Mr Peter Micklewright, a devoted classic Jaguar collector, brought the vision to fruition, commissioning Vorlaufer in 2016 to carry out the reconstruction. Vorlaufer completely rebuilt the car on the 1936 chassis.

The vendor says no expense was spared in the build. Indications are that it took four years and 3,500 hours to complete. An Ashley’s body was used as the starting point, subsequently modified to the owner’s bespoke requirements and fitted with hand-crafted wings and a genuine SS100 bonnet. Every component, material and method of body shaping is said to replicate what the SS works would have produced in period. The engine is a 2,500cc unit for relaxed high-speed cruising.

The vendor describes the finished result as concours-quality craftsmanship, born of Mr Micklewright's exacting standards and deep passion for the marque. For those seeking an SS 100 Tourer of this calibre, this reconstruction warrants serious attention.

Aside, perhaps from informed judges at a high end Concours D’Elegance, it is hard to differentiate this SS100 recreation from an original. That is a testament to the work and knowledge of its builder, Wally Vorlaufer.

Finished in British Racing Green with tan leather, this beautifully detailed car has covered very few miles since completion. It presents at a high level.
