The Appeal
Just as Ferruccio Lamborghini did for Italian smallholders in the immediate postwar years, so Ferdinand Porsche did for German farmers. Driven by the idea of the ‘Volksschlepper’ or ‘people’s tractor’, Porsche conceived a range of tractors ideal for Germany’s broader range of small, medium and large farms. The 308L was available for two years from 1958, by which time Porsche was building his own tractors, and aimed at larger agricultural concerns.
As the name suggests, the 308L was a longer wheelbase version of the popular 308. But there was much more to it than that. It featured a clever dual-clutch system that let it stop moving while keeping the machinery operating. It was more stable too, and featured an adjustable portal axle, letting the farmer adjust ground clearance and track width. A specialised intermediate housing between motor and gearbox meant side-mounted mowing equipment could be easily attached and operated.
These were expensive and specialised machines. Of the 125,000 tractors built by Porsche between 1956 and 1963, just 1,000 were 308Ls. Of those, only a tiny fraction survive. This 1959 example is likely one of the very best. We’re told it was extensively restored in 2019, including cosmetics and mechanicals such as the engine, gearbox, and running gear. It was subsequently displayed in a private collection and never used for work. The vendor bought it in 2026 and decided to fully repaint it to show-quality standard. It was also checked over, resulting in four new tyres. Described as ‘museum standard’ by the seller, it is one of the best of these rare and collectable tractors that we have seen in a long while.
The vendor says:
“The Porsche-Diesel Super is, in itself, a much rarer variant than the more common Junior and Standard models. This particular example is also a 308 L, an even more sought-after configuration, fitted with a dual-clutch system and produced in limited numbers. What makes this tractor even more interesting is its exceptional state of preservation: fully restored, in perfect working order and now in true collector’s condition. It starts easily and runs perfectly. The engine runs smoothly, the gearbox is precise, and the controls work perfectly. It drives smoothly and is a pleasure to drive.”
