The Appeal
The Meyers Manx is one of the most recognisable and desirable beach buggies ever created, based upon the much-loved Volkswagen Beetle and turning it into the ultimate dune-hopper. This short-wheelbase Meyers Manx specification buggy was professionally rebuilt in 2011 by Flatlands Engineering, with invoices totalling £11,000 from that specialist alone reflecting the quality and extent of the work carried out.
What sets this buggy apart is its mechanical specification. A Porsche 356 engine fitted with twin Zenith carburettors provides the power, while a Bears Motorsport gearbox with a super differential and welded 3rd and 4th gears handles the transmission. Period-correct details include banded VW Beetle wide-five wheels with correct hubcaps, an original 1956 oval trip speedometer, and Bernard Newbury Empi seats.
The vendor says:
"Since its rebuild, the buggy has covered just 370 miles — yes, only 370 miles in 15 years. As a result, it is much more of a collector’s piece than a regularly used vehicle.

It has always been kept garaged and maintained on a trickle charger, primarily being displayed and preserved as a showpiece. The oil and spark plugs have been changed recently, and an MOT has been carried out for additional peace of mind; this is to be done again prior to sale.
There is a very small oil leak from the offside rocker cover, but only when the engine is running. This is possibly due to the vehicle’s very limited use.
Overall, this is a genuine one-off, exceptionally good-looking beach buggy that presents as practically brand new. With its extensive Flatlands Engineering rebuild, Porsche 356 engine, period-correct details and extremely low mileage since restoration, it would make an excellent addition to a collection. It now needs to be driven, enjoyed and appreciated rather than simply sitting in the garage as a showpiece — the next owner will hopefully be the one to give it the use it deserves.
