The Appeal

For a car that always looked largely the same, there are a surprising number of flavours of the ‘Big Healey.’ Everyone has their favourite, but there’s general agreement that the short-lived Mk2 is a particularly sweet spot. These cars kept the Mk1's pretty interior but added roll-up windows and better wet-weather protection, making them a neat blend of early- and late-car strengths.

Most, of course, went overseas as part of the ‘export or die’ drive, but 455 home market buyers picked up the keys to Mk2 2+2 BJ7s. This car is one of them; its chassis number indicates that it was among the last 100 Mk2s built in 1964 before the Mk3 arrived. Its ‘red on red’ colour scheme is a nice alternative to the more common Healey Blue, and it is in extremely good condition inside and out.

The large history file indicates that it was restored in the late 1990s by specialist Bounds & Kelly. More recently, £3,000 was invested across electrics, ignition system, brakes, new radiator and carburettor work via Peter Ostling Automotive. In 2025 the car went to Bill Rawles for a check over, which can be seen in the photos. Buyers are also aided by a recent voluntary MOT from August 2024, which contained no advisories.

Pretty and well presented, this is a really nice and now rare RHD home market Mk2.
