The Appeal
The Bedford J2 truck chassis was built for all manner of applications. These light-duty commercial vehicles were remarkably versatile, and Devon's small fire brigades found them particularly handy as mid-sized appliances, as they could fit down narrow country lanes. They carried around 200 gallons and were purchased as four units, coachbuilt by HCB Engineering. A few other small Welsh and South West brigades placed similar orders. Notable quirks include the steering wheel offset to the driver's left, the gear lever positioned behind the driver and a single nearside entry for officers and crew, all fitted to make the most of the limited space on the chassis!
This particular J2 was first registered in April 1964 and served with the fire brigade in Lynton, Devon, before later becoming the estate fire appliance at Allhallows School, where older pupils were trained in its use. Its history is extensively documented, tracing a fascinating journey through multiple custodians over more than six decades.
In 2009, this fabulous truck was discovered and subsequently sensitively refurbished to retain its character. It retains its firefighting accessories, including the Godiva pump, hose reel, Bailey timber bow-trussed ladders and a portable fire extinguisher, along with original signage and its '11-9' call number on the flanks.
Accompanied by four service training manuals, two full uniforms and a wealth of historical documentation, this fire engine is a very impressive, very handsome package. We're sure it'll attract plenty of interest at auction, and deservedly so. image.png5.6 MB
