The Appeal
With Jaguar busily launching a brand-new four-door luxury car to American buyers, it’s a perfect time to consider its spiritual predecessor, the Mk X, and its rebadged successor, the 420G. The widest saloon car Jaguar has ever built, and at the time the longest too, it was designed to trump Detroit metal in its home market.
The car instead found its natural home amongst well-heeled UK buyers, notably the Krays and their entrepreneurial rivals. That, plus the long, low style, gives it a wonderful charisma unmatched by German and French rivals. The 420G was a rebadged and mildly reworked Mk X that arrived in 1966. Just 4,429 were built in RHD, and this lovely example was among the last to leave the factory. It is finished in William Lyons’ preferred colour, Sable, matched with a smart tan leather cabin. The chassis number indicates it left the factory with an automatic gearbox but now has the ultra-rare and desirable 4-speed manual gearbox with overdrive.
The car has been in the same family for over 50 years, having served as the principal family car for many years. It was used extensively for touring, including holidays across Europe. In the early 1990s, a restoration was undertaken that included new bodywork, a refreshed interior, and an engine rebuild. The car was passed to the current vendor by their father in the early 2000s.
Today, the engine runs and the car drives, though a new clutch will be required in the near future. The bodywork is described by the vendor as fair for its age and would benefit from cosmetic attention in places. This is an honest, complete car with a collection of increasingly hard-to-find spare parts, including a set of wheels with tyres, a windscreen, and a front bumper. For an enthusiast seeking a rare-specification Jaguar with genuine long-term family provenance, this is well worth a closer look.
