The Appeal
Few motorcycles did more to establish Kawasaki’s reputation for large-capacity performance than the original Z1. Launched in the early 1970s with a 903cc DOHC four-cylinder engine, it quickly became one of the defining superbikes of its generation. For 1976, the model evolved into the Z900 A4, gaining a revised specification that included twin front brake discs while retaining the imposing proportions and air-cooled four-cylinder character of its predecessor. Kawasaki quotes output for the 1976 Z900 at 81hp.
This example is presented in largely original trim, with the seller noting that its paintwork, chrome, switchgear, grips and footrest rubbers have all been retained in particularly good condition. Although currently fitted with a four-into-one exhaust, the original four-into-four system is included in the sale, allowing the next owner to return the bike closer to factory specification if desired.
Having been laid up for approximately four years, the Kawasaki has recently benefited from recommissioning work including a fuel-tank clean, carburettor rebuild and clutch strip and inspection, together with fresh engine oil and a new battery. A new chain and sprockets have also been fitted, while the seller reports that the engine now starts and runs correctly.
With no irreversible modifications and a number of original components accompanying it, this Z900 A4 retains much of the character that made Kawasaki’s early large-capacity fours so significant. Its sympathetic recent attention should also make it a particularly appealing basis for continued use or further preservation.
