The Appeal

Introduced in 1965, the GT added a Pininfarina-designed fastback body to the highly successful MGB, providing extra luggage space and greater refinement. Named one of the "16 of Pininfarina's Most Beautiful Designs That Aren't Ferraris" by Road & Track, the GT later became available with the 3.5-litre all-aluminium Rover V8, providing much higher levels of performance and refinement.

This 1978 example began life as a four-cylinder MGB GT and was professionally converted to a V8 in 2018 by MGOC in Cambridge. The engine is fitted with twin SU carburettors and an Edelbrock manifold, as well as an upgraded cooling system with a high-capacity radiator and twin fans, and is paired with an LT77 five-speed gearbox. Comprehensive paperwork on the conversion and upgrades is available.

The front disc brakes have been upgraded, and the car sits on new Minilite-style wheels with Continental tyres, both stated to be new. The underside of the car is exceptionally clean.

The seller has owned the car for eight years. They state the car has always been stored in a garage, and received a respray in Teal Blue. The car has been de-bumpered, resulting in a sportier appearance, and now also features a Webasto-style sliding black leather roof, described as being in “excellent mechanical order”.

Inside, the car has also undergone a complete refurbishment; it now features new black seat coverings with red trim, new carpets and a new steering wheel and dashboard trim.

The seller describes the car as “a meticulously built and heavily invested-in car that has been strictly garage-stored and highly maintained. It runs fantastically and offers an incredibly fun driving experience”. This is a fine, upgraded example of MG’s V8 coupé that will provide great pleasure to its next keeper.
