The Appeal

Based on the Opel Rekord E, the Mark 1 Carlton featured distinctive ‘droop snoot’ front-end styling and was available as both a saloon and a spacious five-door estate. With rear-wheel drive and comfortable accommodation, it offered an appealing blend of practicality and refinement.
Initially powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing around 100bhp, the Carlton Estate delivered dependable performance alongside a generous load area. Equally at home on family holidays and everyday duties, it was a versatile and comfortable load-lugger, with a range of optional extras adding to its appeal. It paved the way for the Omega-based Carlton Mk2, introduced in late 1986.
A facelift in 1982 introduced a more conventional front grille, replacing the distinctive droop snoot design. Production continued until 1986, when the Mark 1 was succeeded by the all-new Carlton Mark 2. Our car here is a Mk1 facelift with the 1796cc four-cylinder engine.
Once a familiar sight on British roads, the Mark 1 Carlton Estate has become an increasingly rare classic. Combining understated styling, straightforward mechanicals and genuine practicality, it's a nostalgic reminder of an era when large family estates were built with simplicity and usability in mind.

  • Love-at-first-sight good looks: the burgundy red paintwork presents beautifully. Excellent panel gaps, plus well-preserved badges and trim that deliver a real time-warp first impression
  • There are a number of blemishes and marks around the car, though nothing of great significance. The seller notes that, considering the age of the car, it is astonishingly well preserved
  • Note a couple of blisters at the bottom of the front windscreen surround and on a couple of door bottoms
  • No obvious rust perforations and no dents
  • All stainless steel window surrounds present and free of obvious damage, though they would benefit from a polish
  • Black bumpers and side trims are present and correct, with some fade spots
  • The engine bay is quite remarkable and belies the car's age; suspension turrets and firewall all look virtually as good as new

  • Rear loading area carpets are excellent
  • Upholstery on seats and door trims all in superb order
  • Footwells are protected with original GM heavy-duty rubber floor mats

  • Very clean under-bonnet presentation

BEFORE YOU BUY
This sale is subject to the Car & Classic Terms and Conditions. By bidding and/or making an offer, you also agree to the following:
✓ The seller is registered as a private seller, which means consumer rights stemming from EU consumer protection law do not apply. However, you are still covered by Car & Classic's own Terms and Conditions.
✓ We request that a non-refundable fee be paid if you are the lucky winning bidder at auction or if your offer is accepted. Please refer to our helpful FAQs and T&Cs for specific rates.
✓ This vehicle is “Sold As Seen”, on an “As Is Where Is” basis and without warranty. Photos and descriptions are solely for guidance, and it's customary to carry out a full inspection of the vehicle prior to purchase for your own peace of mind.
✓ VAT is included in the buyer's fee. VAT may or may not be included in the final bid or offer price, as specified in the listing.
✓ We want a smooth transaction just as much as you do, so we run all UK-registered cars and motorbikes for sale on Car & Classic through an online HPI check to verify that they show no insurance database markers for damage or theft and have no finance owing, allowing you to bid with confidence.
✓ We also check whether vehicles are recorded as written off as part of an insurance total loss claim at the time an advert is placed on Car & Classic, and we helpfully provide write-off category labels (Cat C/D/S/N) for your assistance. However, the presence or absence of a label does not guarantee the vehicle's status, so it is always worthwhile carrying out your own full vehicle history check before making an offer on a vehicle.
✓ Buyers are responsible for vehicle collection
or delivery. Importing vehicles may result in additional customs duties and import taxes, so it's worth checking beforehand. It is the bidder's responsibility to confirm import eligibility prior to purchase.
✓ Unless stated otherwise, you must assume that any cherished, personalised, or heritage vehicle registration is not included in the sale of a vehicle.
