The Appeal
The E30 M3 needs little introduction. Born from BMW Motorsport's Group A touring car homologation programme in 1986, it has become one of the most revered driver's cars of its generation: a raw, purposeful machine that rewrote the rules for what a compact sports saloon could achieve. German-market examples, built to the original domestic specification, are particularly prized among collectors and enthusiasts.
This 1987 example is very special indeed. Classic Heroes, a BMW marque specialist, took it on, developing it into a 'Competition spec' E30 M3 with a clear philosophy: a car that is genuinely quick on track yet remains comfortably drivable on the road. It also has notable provenance, having previously been owned by Jay Kay, the Jamiroquai frontman and well-known car enthusiast. The sale includes a photograph of Jay kay with the car and there is also video evidence of him driving it.
At the heart of the build is a 2.5-litre competition engine producing circa 260bhp at the flywheel, paired with a short-shift gear change for precise, mechanical shifts. The chassis has been uprated with sports suspension, AP front discs and callipers, and 17-inch wheels, giving the car serious circuit credentials. The emphasis throughout has been on turn-key usability, a car you can drive to the track, enjoy a full day's running, and drive home again.IMG_2459.jpeg5.45 MB

This is as quintessentially '80s as cars get, and a purposeful-looking machine at that. It boasts a DTM-inspired BMW factory team livery, while accessories include a carbon fibre adjustable DTM rear wing, carbon fibre DTM side mirrors, and 3-piece BBS RS alloy wheels. Inside, we find a roll cage, Recaro seats, and race harnesses, while plush features like the door cards, carpets, and factory dashboard remain. This balance between standard and modified greatly enhances the car's on-road usability. It even has a radio. The overall condition is very good, as the photographs attest, with the BMW clearly having received a great deal of care and attention over the years.

Five-speed dog-leg manual gearbox with short-shift gear change
Upgraded 330mm AP Racing brake setup featuring 4-pot callipers
Fully adjustable aftermarket suspension system equipped with competition-spec rear shock top mounts
260bhp is more than enough to make this 3 Series a seriously quick car. It's also great to see that the brakes and suspension have been uprated accordingly. The under-bonnet presentation is very clean, which can be seen in the photographs, and the vendor is to offer the BMW freshly NCT-tested, ready for its new owner.
