The Appeal
In the midst of the 1980s hot hatch wars, Ford and Vauxhall’s design teams were busying themselves adding go-faster stripes to the Fiesta XR2 and Nova SRi. Over at Renault, however, the designers were joined by the engineers who ensured the 830kg 5 GT Turbo didn’t just look good; it went astonishingly well too. In fact, it was the fastest hot hatch of its era.
The faster, more reliable Phase 2 put 120bhp through the scrabbling front wheels, helped by a water-cooled Garrett T2 turbo. Today these cars are exceptionally rare, especially ones as good as this Electric Blue example. We’re told the current keeper has owned it for 19 years and it has benefited from extensive maintenance and improvements. He reports that it was restored over a six year period, including a colour change from grey to blue, with work covering body repairs, repaint, mechanical overhaul and a cabin retrim in correct Phase 2 materials.
Mechanically, the car is largely standard but benefits from a small number of performance-oriented upgrades. Over £4,000 of work has been carried out over the past year covering brakes, suspension, ignition and cooling components. A substantial history file accompanies the car.
With a current MOT and significant recent expenditure, this is a well-sorted GT Turbo ready to be enjoyed.
