The Appeal
It’s hard not to think that Honda didn’t need to make the original Type R Civic quite this good. With its high-revving B16B engine, incredible power output from a small engine and ultra-lightweight construction, this car was so far ahead of and so much better than its rivals that it almost made a mockery of the race.
The car was so good that Japanese customers kept it to themselves, with only a handful later finding their way to Europe alongside it. This 1999 example is finished in Grigio over a Rosso/Nero interior. It is reportedly only 400 produced in this colour, making it rarer than the more commonly seen yellow variant. The vendor purchased the car in July 2022 and has taken a preservation-focused approach, carrying out a long list of work using genuine components. The car has been garaged throughout and, according to the vendor, has never been driven in rain or snow. Since the work was completed, it has covered approximately 3,000 km, including an appearance at JCM at Misano, Italy, where it was reportedly the only EK9 among 1,400 cars.
Cosmetically, the left-side bodywork was repaired due to clear coat deterioration, with original Type R badge stickers sourced for the restoration. The wheels were restored using a multi-coat paint process, and the engine bay was cleaned with dry ice. Mechanically, the car benefits from KW Version 3 coilover suspension and an HKS exhaust end can.
Registered with the ASI and presenting well throughout, this EK9 offers a rare opportunity to acquire one of Honda's most celebrated hot hatches in an uncommon, collectable specification.
The vendor says:
“The car has been carefully preserved; only the work strictly necessary to do justice to such a unique car has been carried out. I should point out that only 400 units were produced in this colour – it is even rarer than the yellow version. Obviously, it has not been completely rebuilt. It has been carefully preserved, not rebuilt!
“It’s an iconic car and very rare on European soil; in fact, mine was the only one for sale. Then there’s the colour, which carries a lot of weight from a collector’s perspective. It’s an incredible car in terms of its engine – 185 cavalli on 950 kg is more than enough; the set-up gives it virtually limitless cornering behaviour; the steering is very direct and precise. Furthermore, with the integrated limited-slip differential and integrated braking system (fitted as standard), plus a modified and stiffened chassis (compared to the EK4 1.6 VTEC model that arrived in Europe), the car drives like a go-kart!!! It’s right at home in the mountains and on winding roads, where it really comes into its own with the VTEC kicking in at 6,200 rpm and taking it up to almost 9,000 rpm (I recall that it comes fitted as standard with camshafts that are even more aggressive than the Integra’s, and in fact you can really feel it when it kicks in).”

SellerNo problem, but as I said, I picked them up during my house move, and I prefer to be honest and tell it straight. Anyway, the car is perfect and you won't find another grey one in that condition with those miles on it...

SellerLook, for the work that's been done I've got photos of the prices, the parts fitted and the work carried out by my mechanic with the relevant car inspection. We're talking about a Honda with 77,000 km, let's be clear GENUINE and you can see it from the service records, the proper service stamps that have been done.

BidderThat’s all I am asking is what service stamps the car has.. so if you are saying the proper service stamps you can see it from then that’s fine. This is an auction my friend so it’s currently at 10k that’s not my offer it’s where the auction is currently at. Thank you for your time
kdm••••
SellerBut one thing I'm wondering – you made these requests/questions fairly enough and offered 10k...... Hmm, I don't get it – do you really know the model/rarity? I reckon these things matter up to a point, and I know how this car's been looked after and treated.

BidderHi, what paperwork do you have with the car ? Do you have the Honda handbook and service book ? Does it come with 2 keys ?
Jbakere••••
BidderSo just to confirm the car has no stamped service history with it ? What do you Have in terms or service records ?
kdm••••
SellerTo be honest, I’d rather tell it like it is; otherwise, I’ll just buy it online and then tell you it’s yours.
