When BMW’s redux of the Mini brand came to market as the all-caps MINI in 2001, the R50 model started out as a two-tiered structure: the One, and the Cooper, both of which shared the 1.6-litre Tritec engine in different states of tune. Of course, the Cooper name has been synonymous with the brand from time immemorial, so it was inevitable that a Cooper S would arrive before long. And in 2002, that’s exactly what happened. The model was markedly different to the lesser MINIs in the range, so much so that it earned its own designation, R53, and the most notable upgrade was the addition of a supercharger. Recognisable by its functional bonnet scoop and centre-exit exhausts, this was a true driver’s car that instantly became an icon. 

The R53 we have here, however, is no ordinary Cooper S. The Works badge on the tailgate is a clue. This car is fitted with the super-desirable John Cooper Works kit, comprising an upgraded exhaust system, smaller supercharger pulley, freer-flowing air filter, larger injectors, uprated spark plugs, modified cylinder head and ECU tweaks, all of which elevated peak power from 170bhp to a robust 200bhp. This package was developed to be something that could be retrofitted by dealers, but what’s particularly notable about this car is that it’s one of an initial batch of 200 that were built to this spec in the BMW factory. So this was never a retrofit of a customer car, this one was built this way from the start. These rare cars are highly sought after by collectors today – every one of the 200 was finished in this exterior colour scheme with the contrasting white roof, complemented by the half-leather and blue cloth interior. 

The MINI is presented in all-original spec, in lovely condition throughout, and that makes it an extremely rare find indeed. The current owner has had it since 2009; from 2016 to this summer it’s been stored away unused due to various other cars keeping him busy, but now it’s been brought out of storage, treated to a fresh MOT, and it’s ready for its next set of adventures. 

 

The bodywork is beautifully presented. It’s no secret that hot hatches can have a hard life, but this one really feels as if it’s been cherished – the paintwork presents very well (and really sparkles in the sun), the shutlines are even, there are no dings, scuffs or scratches. The original 17” alloy wheels are in great condition with no kerbing, although the tyres have 2011 and 2014 date codes so replacement ought to be kept in mind. The light lenses are all clear and undamaged, the window glass is all good, and the frameless front windows seal correctly when raised. This car also benefits from the double electric sunroof, which works as it should. 

Inside the cabin, everything is very tastefully preserved with no evident wear beyond a scuffed patch on one of the dash rails beside the stereo. All the trim and controls are present and correct, and the seats are in great order with no rips or undue wear – indeed, the rear bench looks to have had very little use. The carpets are neat, and inside the boot it’s all dry and tidy. 

 

A standard Cooper S is a perky and playful thing, but this 200bhp John Cooper Works upgrade really knocks things up a notch. The acceleration is vivid, the smaller pulley on the supercharger really letting it sing along with increasing the urgency of the boost, and the Works exhaust system has a lovely crisp tone. The handling is engaging, the steering direct and the brakes strong – it’s a supremely fun car and everything feels proper and correct, with none of the rattles and shimmies one might expect of a car of this age. 

We can see from the service history that it’s always been looked after; it may have been sat in stasis for the past decade, but prior to that it was fastidiously serviced at regular intervals. It’s also worth noting that the car has been in the care of a renowned sports and supercar specialist for all of its time off the road, and as such the recommissioning this year has been handled by experts. It’s a hugely entertaining car to drive, and will surely give its next keeper a lot to smile about.
