The Appeal
The R230-generation Mercedes-Benz SL arrived at the beginning of the new millennium with considerably more technology than its predecessor, most notably a folding metal Vario roof that allowed it to transform from enclosed coupé to open roadster at the touch of a button. Beneath that modernised package remained the familiar SL formula of two-seat luxury, effortless performance and long-distance comfort.
Few versions embodied the performance side of that character more convincingly than the SL 600. Its 5.5-litre twin-turbocharged V12 produces an impressive 493bhp and 800Nm of torque, delivered through a five-speed automatic transmission. Unlike the more overtly sporting AMG variants, the SL 600 disguises its pace beneath comparatively restrained styling, making its performance all the more unexpected.
This example has covered approximately 70,000 miles and is accompanied by the private registration 'V12 MRX', an especially fitting addition given what sits beneath the bonnet. A substantial collection of recent invoices from Mercedes-Benz specialist Star Tech documents regular servicing and significant maintenance, including replacement of the ABC control unit and a complete fluid change in 2024. The seller describes the interior as presenting well for its age and reports that everything operates as it should, including the electrically folding roof.
With twelve-cylinder power, a discreet appearance and supercar-rivalling pace, the SL 600 occupies a particularly interesting place within the R230 range. It is a car that delivers its performance with remarkable ease, making it one of the more intriguing modern-classic SL variants.
