The Appeal
There was a time when Ford and Mazda teamed up to produce a number of vehicles. One of those was the MX-6, which shared it’s mechanical underpinnings with the Ford Probe (although Ford produced their own bodystyle). Available with either a two-litre four-cylinder or a meatier V6, such as you see here, they were both stylish and handsome alternatives to a mainstream hatch or saloon.
Of course, you simply don’t see them on the roads very much these days – as such, it’s heartening to be able to present this lovely survivor, which has been preserved in unmodified, factory specification and looks to be very clean and solid.
Running well, with a current MOT to December this year, and benefitting from that soulful V6 powertrain and an engaging manual transmission, this would be an excellent candidate for a light restoration or to recommission and enjoy daily.
The History and Paperwork
- First registered in June 1994
- Three owners from new
- Current owner since November 2006
- Current MOT to December 2023
- Complete with two keys, but no remote as the alarm has been removed
- Lots of documentation, old MOTs and history from the car’s early years, less so from recent times as it has been little used
- Covered an average of less than 1,400 miles per year in current ownership – garaged and used as a “backup” car
- SORN for a few years in current ownership
- 112,579 miles indicated, verified by the MOT record
The Interior
- Light grey leather upholstery
- The seats are generally in fine condition, with the rear bench and passenger seats being in fine condition for their age
- There is some wear to the driver’s seat, with a worn through bolster that has been patched
- Black carpet throughout looks to be in pretty good order
- Smart grey fabric headlining is intact and show no signs of sagging or staining
- There is a little sagging to the material inserts on the door cards
- Electric windows and door mirrors
- Air conditioning
- Period Clarion radio/cassette with a CD changer in the boot
- Factory-fitted, electrically operated metal sunroof
- Generous boot area, trimmed in grey carpet, containing a full-size spare wheel, tool roll and jack
- Pulling the boot carpet back, we see the wheel well and floor look nice and solid, with no damage or corrosion apparent
The Exterior
- Gloss red paintwork, which all looks to be in fine fettle with some chips, marks and blemishes commensurate with the car’s age
- The bumpers and rear spoiler are a little faded, but appear as if they should polish back nicely, and there is a light scuff to the near-side front bumper
- Integrated front fog lights
- All of the bodywork appears to be straight and clean, with no corrosion we could identify, other than one small patch on the sunroof
- All of the trim and badging looks to be present and correct
- The headlights and rear lamps all look to be clear and undamaged
- Original 15-inch factory alloys are present and correct, showing a little wear and tear, but no more than we’d expect considering the car’s age
- It appears as if the tyres may soon require changing
- Looking underneath, there is some corrosion to the suspension and brake components, but as far as we could tell the floors and sills look nice and solid, with no evidence of damage or notable corrosion
The Mechanics
- 2,497cc DOHC 24-valve V6
- Five-speed manual
- Front wheel drive, with a factory rating of 162bhp
- Anti-lock braking system
- Nice, tidy engine bay, with no apparent modification
- The MOT is valid to December 2023 but notes a minor oil leak and that some suspension and brake components would benefit from replacement
- The car starts well, runs nicely with no smoke from the exhaust, and we’re not informed of any mechanical issues
Summary
Increasingly rare, this MX-6 is a very usable retro sports coupé that’s on the verge of becoming a true modern classic. With a little love and attention, we feel it could soon present exceptionally well.
